About Me

P1010005 About Me

I figure it’s about time I fill out the about me page that has been here for over two years and was left completely as is from the time I set up my blog. So here goes…

My name is Nicole and I am a 37 year old single, plus size woman who happens to have a passion for clothing and shopping. I am originally from Yonkers, NY which is located just outside of the five boroughs and is often considered the unofficial “sixth borough”. I currently reside in Putnam County, NY.  From the time I was about 17 years old, I started to take an active interest in the clothing that I chose to wear.  Being a big girl for my entire life and not having any control over what I was able to wear or buy for myself I was stuck wearing lots of ugly, old and frumpy looking clothing during my younger years.  By the time I turned 17 I had shed about 90lbs. through Deal-A-Meal (LOL OMG, right?) and was suddenly awakened with the possibilities that for once, even though I was still about a size 18, I could finally fit into better looking clothes.

When I was younger I always would read Cosmopolitan and Mademoiselle, and any other fashion magazine I could get my hands on and even wanted to be a designer at one point in my life. That clearly never happened though. Maybe if I hadn’t spent so much time sketching during social studies…

At that time the only retailers that were really around were Lane Bryant, The Avenue, and Modern Woman and some other retailer which I forget the name of who is no longer in business today, as well as Modern Woman. Once I was out of high school I got a job as a third key supervisor at Modern Woman and really felt at home there and just loved being able to see all of the new clothes we received before it even hit the rack. Fashion for big girls was still begrudgingly being pushed to expand and every cute outfit I could find I made sure I had it. My next favorite store was Lots to Luv which I think at the time was a spin off of Charade. A monster was born!

Lots To Luv was my mecca for cute, fun, funky and urban looking clothing which completely and totally defined who I was at that time in my life and it finally gave me freedom to be chunky and cute.  Around the same time Lane Bryant was finally getting with the program and completely revamping their image and style and started carrying really stylish, very trendy clothing and these two stores became my religion throughout my twenties. I did also mix things up with stuff from a lot of the major retailers like The Gap, Aeropostale, Structure, Merry-Go-Round and any handful of other places off of Fordham Rd like Dr. Jay’s.

In 2000, I turned twenty-seven and my life took some unexpected turns and I found myself living up in New Hampshire in the middle of no man’s land. My entire fashion world caved in. I had to be resourceful and start finding cute clothes for me that I could get online because there was nothing around here. That’s when I started finding sites like sizeappeal.com, kiyonna.com, igigi.com and b&lu.com and sites like those have been my staples ever since with a mix of LB, Torrid and Fashion Bug.

So I’m not a fashion industry insider, I’m just a fat chick who loves to express herself through clothes.  My sense of style is a little contrarian to what the experts would match together. That has always been the norm for me when it comes to my bags, jewelry, and shoes. I am always looking for that item that not everyone else is carrying. But even saying that, certainly there are pieces of my wardrobe that you can see many other women wearing, after all the big girls only have just so many places that they can shop from so it’s inevitable that you will see two big girls wearing the same kind of tops or what have you.

In the last six months I have taken and active interest in watching YouTube makeup guru’s spit out tutorials showcasing beautiful, funky and fun makeup artistry and just loved how much fun all of these girls were having doing haul videos and tutorials and just sharing their love of shopping and clothing and so I do it for the fun and for the learning experience. It’s a fantastic creative outlet about something that I’m passionate about and that’s what makes life fun! So long story short, that’s my 19 year love affair with clothes and beauty. Enjoy!!
